Netball

Netball is offered to all girls at Friends’. Practices are arranged to enable all girls to play both hockey and netball. Four afternoons each week Minors (Y9), Juniors (Y10) Intermediates (Y11 & 12) and Seniors (Y13 & 14) are coached by Mrs Gemma Hamilton, a past pupil of Friends’ who gained NI representative honours. Whilst still playing at the highest club level Mrs Hamilton is also recognised as talented coach. Teams are entered in NI cup and league competitions as well as the Lisburn Development league.

Netball Report 2018-19

2018/19 has been another successful season for netball at Friends’. From new and promising talent in the incoming Year 8 group to success in League Finals at the very end of the season.

The Minor team this year proved to be very successful; they had an impressive run in their cup campaign which saw them reach the Cup semi-final. They came up against a very composed Our Lady and St.Patrick’s College, Knock, team, who were their toughest competition to date. A loss in this match saw them placed in to the Shield Semi-Final. They faced a much improved Lumen Christi side, who they had beaten earlier in the cup competition. In a very close match, which went to extra time, the girls were beaten by one goal, a nail biting match for both schools.

The Minors were also successful in winning their District league, beating Wallace, Rathmore, Down High and Assumption. This meant they had qualified for the overall league finals. In the ¼ final they defeated Cookstown HS and in an exciting end-to-end match defeated Glenlola 14-13 in the semi-final. Sadly, Belfast HS proved too strong in the final winning 20-8. Nevertheless, a fantastic season for a talented group of girls.

The Minor B’s had a successful run in their league this year with wins over Wallace, Hunter House and Down High, losing only to a very strong Shimna College team, therefore finishing second in their league.

The Junior teams worked hard throughout the season, playing well in their league, finishing second, having only been beaten by a strong Down high. Their cup run commenced in dramatic style, with a draw and replay in the first round against Cambridge House. They were placed into the bowl competition in a later round, but narrowly beaten by a strong Glenlola Side in the ¼ final.

The Intermediate A team competed in the Premier Section of the leagues this year. They faced strong competition in a competitive league. They may not have been placed high in their league, their performance improved vastly over the course of the season and although beaten, their losses were narrow and highly contested.

The Intermediate B against faced toughed competition playing in their district league against very strong Assumption and Down High teams in home and away fixtures. The girls performed in very competitive matches with consistency and showed improvement over the course of the season.

The Senior A team began their season pursuing their cup campaign, winning closely contested matches against Cookstown and Lumen Christ. In the quarter final, they lost to a strong Methody side, which saw them entered into the quarter final of the shield, where they played Glenlola, which, after a competitive game, the girls were narrowly defeated.

The team confidently secured wins against Cookstown, Wallace and Mount Lourdes in the A section of Premier League 2. In the Premier 2 final, the girls played against Lagan College, who were Section B winners. Throughout the game, tensions were high and the score line was tight, however in the last quarter the FSL side managed to pull away and secure a 30-25 victory, giving them the title of Senior Premier League 2 winners!

The Senior B team competed in the district league against Wallace and Hunter House in home and away fixtures. Wins over hunter house and a loss to Wallace saw them finish middle of the table. The girls worked hard and improved throughout the season, enjoying their netball.

Several players represented Friends’ on national and regional squads this year. At regional U13 level Emma Smyth, Sophia Cromie and Brooke Logan were selected to the Lisburn squad. At regional U15 level Kiera Miel-Delbederi was selected.

At national level Rebekah Irwin and Olivia Hall trained as part of the U17 development squad, alongside Shannon McCleery and Aoife Doyle on the U19 Development squad and Ruby McElhinney on the U21 squad.

Emily McMurtry was successfully selected to the U17 National Squad and competed in the European Championships in Huddersfield, in March this year, having previously represented NI at the UK youth games for the NI U15 squad in June.

Throughout each year group netball has been well attended and enjoyed, it has been a busy season with a new league structure and introduction of the bowl competition, affording all teams additional opportunity to play matches.

Thanks must go to Mrs Hamilton and Miss Henning for their encouragement and hard work throughout the season and to Mrs Rodgers and Miss Adams for their continued support and assistance.
