Department

Mathematics

We are committed to inspiring an enjoyment of Mathematics, embracing the belief that every pupil is a mathematician.

We aim to equip them with the essential skills of logical thinking and problem solving, while challenging each pupil at their level within a supportive and caring environment. We strive to cultivate resilient learners who are not only willing to take risks and make mistakes but also grow from these experiences. All teachers are subject specialists with an incredible depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for Mathematics. Together, we aim to create a vibrant learning community that nurtures a lifelong passion for Mathematics and prepares our students to excel in an ever-changing world.

Curriculum

The course aims to provide students with a solid foundation for the examination years, focusing on algebra, number, shape, space & measure, and data handling.

We also offer additional support for those who need extra help to reach their potential. Students are assessed weekly through low-stakes retrieval tests and homework using the Dr Frost Maths online resource, ensuring continuous feedback and reinforcement of their learning.

At Key Stage 4 we follow the CCEA specification and offer tailored pathways based on each student’s mathematical ability.

We provide an accelerated course option where students can sit the GCSE Mathematics exam at the end of Year 11 and the GCSE Further Mathematics exam at the end of Year 12.

At Key Stage 5 we follow the CCEA specification, which prepares students for university and beyond. GCSE Further Mathematics is not required to study A level Mathematics but is strongly recommended.

A-level Further Mathematics is an option for our most able pupils and is taught in parallel with the A level Mathematics course. We also regularly prepare pupils for Oxbridge admissions tests and interviews.

We believe in extending mathematical learning beyond the classroom, offering enriching experiences that challenge and inspire our students.

UKMT Maths Challenge: Pupils across all year groups participate in the UKMT Maths Challenge at Junior, Intermediate, and Senior levels. Each year we have a number of pupils who qualify for the follow-on Kangaroo Challenge and Olympiad competitions.

We also enter the annual UKMT Team Challenge, achieving first place in recent years and qualifying for the UK finals in London.

QUB Mathematics Team Competition: Year 13 and 14 students compete in the QUB Mathematics team competition, achieving top-three finishes consistently over the last five years, with two wins.

Pi Competition: Each year on Pi Day (March 14th), students participate in a ‘Pi competition’. The current record stands at an impressive 988 decimal places, set by Finn Kelly in 2024.

Maths Week and Integration Bee: During Maths Week in Ireland, we host various events to promote mathematical interest and skills. Additionally, Year 14 students engage in an annual Integration Bee, showcasing their calculus expertise.
